Chapter 11

I grinned as the Model T rumbled to life under my hands.

“Ahh, the sound of an internal combustion engine never sounded so sweet,” I rhapsodized. I hopped into the front seat and patted the bench beside me. “Come up here, ladies, and let’s figure out how to drive one of these.”

“I’ve often wished that I could ride around in one of the electric carriages I saw on the road,” Emma remarked as she climbed into the vibrating Model T. “I mean, when it was under the control of a human hand, not when it was rushing about madly under its own chaotic power.”

“It is louder than the grass-eater we saw, and yet I fear it less.” Fela leapt into the backseat of the old car. The saber-toothed cat-girl craned her head to watch as I demonstrated the controls.

“So I’m pretty sure this level on the side is the hand brake.” I grabbed the hand brake on the left, squeezed the lever, and pushed it forward until I heard the sound of the brake scraping away from the concrete. “Yep, hand brake and gear shift. It keeps the car from moving when it’s parked, and you have to pull the lever before you can go. Right now it’s in Neutral, which means that it won’t go anywhere unless you push or pull it.”

“I imagine that we’d be able to push or pull it without turning on the engine?” Emma asked. “It seems like a waste of fuel otherwise.”

“Yeah, we should be able to do that, but now we have to get the car into gear, since I’m pretty sure this is way before the invention of the automatic transmission.” I looked down at the three pedals on the floor. “The one to the left is usually the clutch, which is the pedal we press when we change gears. So let’s try this out and hope I don’t fuck it all up, right?”

“You did say that you had your own horseless carriage you delivered groceries in,” Emma said. “But I imagine the design has changed a bit in the past century or so. None of those carriages outside the hardware store looked quite like anything I would call a carriage, although they were a little closer to this machine than to the ones I’ve seen.”

“The worst I can do is fuck up the engine, and then we’re right back where we started.” I pushed the clutch forward until I could feel the satisfying chunking sound of the gears changing under my foot. “Okay. So we push the pedal on the left forward, now we’re in low gear, and when we drive we’ll be driving kind of slowly.”

“But we are not yet moving,” Fela said.

“We have to get gas to the engine first.” I pressed down on the pedal on the right and heard the scuffing sound of the brake engaging. “Okay, the very right pedal is the brake. When you’re driving, you use that pedal if you need to stop temporarily. But when you park the car and get out, you’ll probably have to put the hand brake on again.
